Haitian to be deported

Federal agents in Miami on Monday arrested Marc Kernizan, a Haitian military
police major convicted in absentia in Haiti for the murder of Antoine
Izmery. He is a well-known supporter of ousted President Aristide.
Kernizan, who fled his country after he was summoned to testify about the
murder, was living in North Miami-Dade. He was taken to the Krome Detention
Center, where he will undergo removal proceedings for failing to disclose
his past, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials said.
U.S. authorities said Kernizan had been identified in his country as a
member of the death squad that led Izmery to his death. On Sept. 11, 1993,
Izmery, 46, a businessman and Lavalas supporter, was attending a church Mass
commemorating the anniversary of the 1988 St. Jean Bosco Massacre when a
squad escorted him from the church and shot him twice in the head.
''The United States will not be a hiding place for murderers and
persecutors,'' said Jesus Torres, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement's
special agent-in-charge in Miami, in a press release. ``Human rights
violators are not going to be allowed to live here among the communities of
the very people they oppressed and terrorized.''
