Marilene Phipps
Poet, Short Story Writer & Painter

Marilene Phipps is a painter and a writer who was born and grew up in Haiti. In
1993 she won the Grolier Prize for poetry and her first book of poems,
Crossroads and Unholy Water, won the 1998 Crab Orchard Review Poetry Prize. Ms.
Phipps has been a Guggenheim, Harvard University and Bunting Institute Fellow.
Her fiction has appeared in Transition, Callaloo, and Crab Orchard Review, and
her short stories collection was selected as part of the Best American Short
Stories in 2003. Her richly textured and vibrantly colored paintings have been
exhibited in major gallery and museum shows in Haiti, the United States, and
Europe.

Marilene Phipps will read Marie-Ange, Ginen which is part of her collection of
interconnected short stories.  Ms. Phipps's reading will be followed by a slide
show of her art work.
