Aristide issued a presidential decree officially recognizing Vodou as a
state religion on April 7, 2003. It authorized Vodou priests to act as
registrars. According to a radio Metropole report on June 3, 2003, Religion
Ministry director general Alentura Jules said it was done to guarantee the
rights of all religious groups in Haiti.
