Reply to Judson From LeGrace Benson, Arts of Haiti Research Project

Dr. Judson is apt to be correct about the origination of the Ezile Danto
from the Polish Czestochowa icon. It would be hard to document, but
certainly is a strong enough possibility for someone to pursue. Old parish
records of the district where the soldiers settled would be one place to
start. It is an especially tempting idea since many heroic figures and/or
their chief attribute-symbols from the period of the revolution became lwa
or the doublure of lwa. Among a group of artists in Cap and vicinity, for
example, Toussaint, Dessalines and Christophe are viewed this way. Toussaint
and Christophe seem to be held as archetypes/lwa in their own identity, and
Dessalines is doubled with, you guessed it, Ogun. I would love to learn of
any work anyone has done or is doing on this topic. An article on such a
topic would be appropriate for the Journal of Haitian Studies, the scholarly
publication of the Haitian Studies Association.
