25406: Simidor opines: Gousse fired from abroad (fwd)
From Daniel Simidor, danielsimidor@yahoo.com
Justice minister Bernard Gousse is an intellectual, a
man of ideas, somehow that makes him a bad minister.
Haitian ministers don?t usually stand on principles ?
a supple back and a honeyed tongue are among their
greatest attributes. Also ears finely attuned to every
whispered wish from the US embassy. Instead Gousse
developed a reputation for being stubborn, arrogant
and vindictive. He went so far as to summon the US
ambassador for an explanation after US Marines
reportedly shot innocent Haitian bystanders in one of
their raids. His letter of resignation is redundant,
quite frankly, after the ten US Congressmen?s letter
to Condoleeza Rice.
The usual Lavalas knuckleheads, mistaking the forest
for the tree, applaud his firing on the assumption
that it will secure the release of Yvon Neptune,
Amanus Mayette, and countless other Lavalas Martyrs
and Heroes (an Orwellian perversion of meaning).
Relatives of the victims of the La Scierie massacre
can just shove it. Across the spectrum, the myopic
elections-as-panacea crowd welcomes the new
development, in the hope that Gousse?s demise will
provide some breathing room to the flailing Latortue
government. So much for justice and sovereignty in
2005 Haiti!
On the other hand, Gousse the law professor should
have promptly resigned after the shameful verdict in
the Chamblain-Joannis retrial case. His silence then,
his meeting with Chamblain shortly before the latter?s
surrender under public pressure, reduced his stature
to that of a minister-of-justice-for-some. Haiti and
the current crisis called for so much more than Gousse
was willing or able to deliver. Whether he will now
feel obliged to write his own account, a la Aristide,
of such an uninspiring term in office, remains to be
seen.
