RE: Arts Panel for HSA
This is a re-posting and clarification of the earlier call for panel
proposals for the 2005 Annual Meeting of Haitian Studies Association, now to
be held October 13-15 at University of Massachussetts-Boston.
CALL FOR PROPOSALS
?Art in a Time of Troubles: What Good Is
It??
We hope to make a serious examination of the question. Many enjoy the arts
but believe they are of little consequence in times of great trouble. In
such periods of history, art is viewed as a low priority. A case can be made
that our creative efforts and resources would be better placed elsewhere
than in the production of paintings, sculpture, music, theatre, film and
dance. (If so where and why.) Thoughtful positions and rebuttals based upon
evidences could lead to formulation of positions from which to take or
refuse action. We hope to include at least one person who can make a case
for setting the arts aside in severe times, and at least one who has
evidence that this could be a serious mistake. Panelists need not be
artists or researchers in the arts: other disciplines and professions are
warmly welcome.
The deadline for proposals is now extended to 1 August. Please send an
abstract up to one page long stating your position and the sources of
supporting evidence.
