PRESIDENTIAL HOPEFUL GAINING SUPPORT
SAN JOSE -- Haiti's presidential front-runner, René Préval, has gained ground
since November, maintaining a considerable lead over his rivals, according to a
poll released to The Associated Press on Friday in Costa Rica.
CID-Gallup Latin America, based in San José, found 37 percent of possible
voters surveyed Dec. 5-12 favored the 63-year-old former president. That
compared to 10 percent for opposition leader Charles Henry Baker and 8 percent
for both Leslie Manigat, a former president and Christian Democrat leader, and
Dumarsais Simeus, who was disqualified from the race in December by Haiti's
interim government.
