30516: lyall (comment) shipping containers (fwd)
from David Lyall
I have been talking about shipping container housing again with a friend.
Talking about building something in the SoCal desert. We both like the idea of
shipping containers or hangar style Quonsets as housing.
There are a bunch of websites with architectural 'studies' and stuff using
shipping containers as, basically, high end artsy stuff.
I just now found a reference to "globalpeacecontainers.com" using containers to
build a school/housing/etc complex in Gonaives. The posting about this project
was in 2005.
Does anyone know about a container project in Gonaives? I have friends who were
doing food/medicine/clothing runs to Gonaives with Minustah escorts in 2004.
I've never visited since the flood.
Now, I've seen 20 foot containers used as road side 'depot' markets, with
windows cut out with a torch. Never seen actual housing done with a container,
altho a bare container might actually be better than a basic block shack.
Hotter down in the plain I guess.
Insulation or a shade roof would be required to make it tolerable.
A simple palm frond pitched roof on top, then a covered veranda. Hm. Not bad.
More acceptable than a dome, probably.
