a1058: Bikes not Bombs in Haiti (fwd)

From: Tttnhm@aol.com

Bikes Not Bombs has sent over 18,500 bikes to Nicaragua, El Salvador, Haiti
and the Dominican Republic in the last 17 years. We provide technical
training, send bicycles, parts and tools and help start new development
projects. BNB speaks out against the social and environmental costs of
militarism and increasing global motorization. But BNB does much more than
talk.

In 1999 BNB worked with the Papay Peasants Movement (MPP) on a project to
directly import mountain bikes from Taiwan and assemble them in Haiti,
thereby creating more jobs. The bikes are sold through a chain of Haitian
bicycle distribution centers nationwide. Because of intense poverty, a 70%
unemployment rate and severe soil erosion, investment in alternative
enterprises is essential in rural areas to stem the exodus of peasants to the
cities where squatter slums abound.
