Everytime I think about going to Haiti in the 80s and being so safe no matter
what time of the day or night, I fight the temptation to appreciate those
days of Duvalier repression. What did it matter to me how order was kept? I
had my pleasant stay and went home without a care. There was an awful price
to pay for that safety but no one advocating the return of Duvalierism or the
Army had to pay it. It would be selfish of me to wish for those days back
just for my own comfort, knowing that so many lost their lives or their loved
ones to the regime.

You say safety was never a concern. It wasn't a concern for those lucky ones
who were favored by the regime, but show any political interest or say
something about Duvalier......and you, your family, any associates, those who
look like you and a few non-involved just for good measure disappear, never
to be seen alive or dead. Terrorism is a very good tool to control people,
even criminals. Too many innocent people died to enjoy looking back on the
"good ole days" of Duvalier and his ton tons makout.
