Haiti Marks 10th Coup Anniversary
By MICHAEL NORTON
GONAIVES, Haiti (AP) - President Jean-Bertrand Aristide marked the 10th
anniversary of the coup that forced him into exile by calling it an act of
``terrorism'' and urging the United States to extradite a paramilitary leader
accused of involvement in the bloodshed that followed....Constant led the
right-wing Front for the Advancement and Progress of Haiti, or FRAPH, which
allegedly led a reign of terror to break the spirit of Aristide supporters
after the coup.

My comment: the AP correspondent is a real stickler for accuracy. No court of
law has proved that FRAPH led a reign of terror in Haiti, so the AP
correspondent correctly writes "allegedly". If only all those writing about a
certain Saudi Arabian were as diligent.

UN appoints Algerian as top envoy to Afghanistan
By Evelyn Leopold
UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Lakhdar Brahimi, a former Algerian foreign
minister, was appointed Wednesday as the chief United Nations envoy for
Afghanistan, in charge of political affairs as well as the relief
operations....Over the past decade, Brahimi has been appointed to a variety
of trouble-shooting jobs by both Annan and his predecessor, Boutros
Boutros-Ghali, including chief of the U.S. mission in Haiti in the mid-1990s.

My comment: was Brahimi the chief of the U.S. mission in Haiti? Surely some
mistake...or maybe not?
