HAITI: EUROPEANS MAINTAIN AID FREEZE
The European Union, which partly suspended aid to Haiti last year after
elections that were boycotted by the opposition to President
Jean-Bertrand Aristide, said the aid would not resume until a political
accord is reached between the government and its opponents. The union
froze nearly $42 million in financing and suspended direct budget aid,
citing a lack of respect for democracy and human rights.
