- Abelard, Gesner. 1922 (Born in Port-au-Prince). Joined the Centre d'Art in
1946. His paintings are known by the unusual birds and trees which abound in them.
Bloncourt, 1986
Started drawing with Jean-Marie Guilloux and sculpture with Normil Charles. He was secret agent of President Elie Lescot. In 1948, invited by DeWitt Peters to join the Centre d'Art where he worked until 1959. One of the most popular Haitian artistists. Known as a painter of flowers, birds and biblical scenes. He has exhibited in Curcao, Mexico, Columbia, Amsterdam, New York, Philadelphia and California.

- Alix, Gabriel. 1930 (Saint Marc). Joined the Centre d'Art in 1946 and he
tends to focus on still life and religious themes.

- Ambroise, Jackson. 1951. Milot. A dream painter with a sense of humor.

- Antoine, Montas. 1926. (Leogane) Joined the Centre d'Art in 1950. He
uses strong colors and childlike style to pain street scenes, rural
marriages and everyday scenes.

- Arijac (See Jacques, Harry).
- Armand, Gesner. 1936 (Croix-des-Bouquets). Studied in Paris after the Centre
d'Art. Returned to Haiti in 1962 and has exhibited widely in Europe,
U.S. and the Caribbean.

- Auguste, Georges. 1933 (Petit-Goave). Orphaned by his mother's death in a
fire, he eventually became a night watchman. He got a position as a
watchman at the Centre d'Art and began using left over materials to paint.
Soon he was neglecting his night watchman's position and had launched
his painting career. He paints Haitian scenes as he sees them in his
dreams.

- Austin, Wilfred (Frido). 1942. Port-au-Prince. One of the founders of Poto-Mitan,
and in addition to painting does ceramics, poetry and is a musician.

- Bazile, Castera. 1923 (Jacmel) -- 1965 (Died of cancer.) He came to work
in the Centre d'Art as a non-painting assistant. He decided to see if
he could paint, and began with flowers and composition. He was one
of the muralists of Holy Trinity Cathedral, and his fame was rising when
his career was cut short by his early death.

- Benjamin, Mario
Born 1960 in Port-au-Prince and lives there.

- Benoit, Rigaud. 1911 (Port-au-Prince) A taxi cab driver who joined the Centre
d'Art in 1944. He was very careful in his painting and at times only completed two paintings a year, using a magnifying glass to inhance
the detail. Benoit is one of the muralists of Holy Trinity Cathedral.

- Bigaud, Wilson. 1931 (Port-au-Prince) In 1946 Bigaud joined the Centre d'Art
and switched from sculpting in clay to painting. He was one of the muralist of Holy Trinity Cathedral, painting "The Wedding at Cana" in 1951. After 1957 he was troubled by depression and stopped painting. He retired to Petit Goave.

- Blain, Roland. 1934. Port-au-Prince. Joined the Foyer des plastique in 1959.
He is also a musician and didn't serious focus on painting until 1967.
He does infinite landscapes from a naïve perspective.

- Blaise, Fabolon. 1959 (Cap Haitien) – 1985. He began to paint in 1975
and tends toward themes of Voodoo and folklore.

- Blaise, Saint-Louis. 1956 (Cap Haitien) Studied with the Bottex brothers
for two years. He paints historical themes and lately has been
focusing on hyper-realism.

- Blaise, Serge Moleon. 1954. (Cap Haitien). Focuses on themes of
Haitian history and works closely with his brother Saint-Louis.

- Bloncourt, Gerald. Born in Bainet in 1926. Poet and watercolorist, was
one of the participating founders of the Centre d'Art.

- Booz, Ludovic. 1940 (Aquin) A sculptor and painter, he studied at the
Academy of Fine Arts from 1960.

- Borno, Maurice. Born in Port-au-Prince in 1917, died Dec. 15, 1955.
Began to paint when the Centre d'Art opened and was one of the
participating founders.

- Bottex, Jean-Baptiste. 1918 (Port Margot) Cap Haitien school, and lesser
known of the Bottex brothers. He tends to feature biblical topics and
daily life scenes in the naïve style.

- Bottex, Seymour Etienne. 1920 (Port Margot). He began painting in 1955
and joined the Centre d'Art in 1961. He likes biblical scenes as
well as historical themes and often includes a painting inside the
painting.
- Bresil, Henri-Robert. 1952. Gonaives. He does fantastic landscapes.

- Brierre, Murat. 1938 (Port-au-Prince). He joined the Centre d'Art in 1957.
In 1965 he began to sculpt form metal and has become famous for
his themes of both Voodoo and Christianity. He has exhibited in
the U.S., Mexico and Jamaica.

- Byron, Bourmond. 1923 (Jacmel) Joined the Centre d'Art in 1955 and
Influenced by his devotion to Voodoo, he is famous for his blue-green
colors and semi-mystical aura.

- Castera, Jean-Claude. 1939 in Petionville. He has lived abroad most of
His career and exhibited in Puerto Rico, Rome and Haiti.

- Chapoteau, Ralph. 1954. Gonaives. Entered the Fine Arts Academy in 1974
and began exhibiting in 1978.

His painting reflects a strong sense of observation. He enjoys crowd scenes.

- Chery, Jacques-Richard
Born in Cap Haitien in 1929. Studied with Seneque Obin, Pierre
Vincent and Seymour Bottex from 1951. In 1961 he joined Centre d'Art
in Port-au-Prince. He does lots of comic drawings of merchants carrying
giant fruit on their heads and is known for his vivid palette.

- Dauffaut, Prefete. (1923) Jacmel. Joined the Centre d'Art in 1948 and was
one of the muralists of Holy Trinity Cathedral. He paints fanstasitc
scenes of cities, often with sea coasts. He claimed to have had a vision of a women wanting him to decorate her house. It led him to carve a decoration for the altar of a chapel in the Notre Dame de Lourdes.

- Dennis, Villard (Darvertige) 1940 – Port-au-Prince. Poet and painter, he has

Born in 1954 in Port-au-Prince and resides there. Studied in both
Paris and Dordeaux, France.

- Dorcely, Roland. 1930. (Port-au-Prince) He started in the Centre d'Art in
1946, but moved to the Foyer des plastique. He spent time in
Paris until 1969 when he moved back to Haiti. His works hang in
The Museum of Modern Art in Paris and the New York Museum of
Modern Art.

city themes of gingerbread houses and colonial mansions. Has

Born in Port-au-Prince, Dec. 6, 1948. After studying at Lycee Petion
he began to paint at 17 years old. Studied at Foyer des Arts Plastiques with Exume and Jolicoeur. He had a French Institute show in 1966.

- Ducasse, Gervais Emmanuel. 1903 (Port-au-Prince) Ducasse specializes in
historical topics and features a childlike style.

up painting later. An abstract painter heavilty influenced by Jackson

painting very young and had his first formal show at age 17.

- Haas, Elsie. 1952. Port-au-Prince. In 1960 she went with her family
into exile in Togo. Educated in Paris she returned to Haiti for
a visit and was deeply moved. Back in France she painted
"Haitian" from a distance.

1952. He has exhibited in much of the Caribbean, Senegal and

Born in 1933 in Port-au-Prince. Studied with Philome Obin at the Centre
d'Art. He evolved from impressionism to cubism, with strong influence from Braque, while maintaining Haitian subjects.

- Hollant, Edith. 1939. Port-au-Prince. Influenced by photography and her
travels, especially to Asia, she first exhibited in 1955.

- Hyppolite, Hector. 1894 (St. Marc) – June 9, 1948 (Port-au-Prince).
House painter and houngan, Hyppolite was "discovered" in 1945
by Philippe Thoby-Marcelin and DeWitt Peters. In three years he
produced 256 paintings! He drew his primary inspiration from Voodoo.

- Ismael, Saincilius. 1940 (Petitie-Riviere) Began to paint in 1956 and helped
found the Albert Schweitzer Exhibition Hall in Deschapelle.

- Joseph, Jacob. Born on March, 19 1924, (Port Au Prince). He joined the Centre
of Arts. He studied and taught art at the school of L'eduction National at Port-Au-Prince. He moved and lived to the United States and set up his studio. During the years he divided his time between Haiti and United States. The artist has an uncanny skill for capturing emotion in his paintings. Whether it is the joyful or wistful look of a child, or the pleasure or pain of the aged, Joseph Jacob transfers it with sensitivity to his canvases. Using color and light, he layers his subjects, weaving semi-transparent images to create works that are emotional and moving. Joseph Jacob pursues the human character, hoping to reveal truth and beauty in his canvases. This world renowned artist has had exhibits in many countries including Haiti, Canada, and the United States. He has won numerous prizes worldwide.

soft colors with a hint of humor.

Savain. She has exhibited in Haiti, Martinique and Guadeloupe.

Joined the Centre d'Art in 1944 working with DeWeitt Peters. He studied
Under several others in various aspects of painting and sculpting. Eventually he joined the administrative council of the Musee d'Art Haitien,

Began at the Centre d'Art in 1948 and is one of the muralists of Holy Trinity Cathedral. He is especially know for his birds and exotic fruit.

- Mangones, Albert. Born in Port-au-Prince in 1917. Studied at the Brussels
Academy of Fine Arts, later at Cornell University. He participated in
creation of Centre d'Art.

Rochester. One of her paintings was chosen for a Haitian stamp. She is
a member of the Women Painters group.

- Monosiet, Pierre. Born in Port-au-Prince in 1922, died in 1983. After studying
Watercoloring at Centre d'Art he took up museum administrating and became an important organizing force of Musee d'Art Haitien.

- Nadal-Gardere, Marie-Jose. Born in Port-au-Prince in 1931. She joined the
Centre d'Art in 1944 and exhibited when was only 13. She studied and
exhibited in both the U.S. and Europe, She is a member of the
"Women Painters" group and runs a gallery in Haiti.

- Naval, Andre. 1949. Port-au-Prince. He began painting in 1978 and does
decorative canvases.

- Nesti, Jacqueline. 1932. Port-au-Prince. After many years of study, travel
and meeting famous artists, she returned to Haiti in 1956. She
painted scenes of everyday life and nature. She later moved to Italy.

- Normil, Andre. 1934 (Port-au-Prince) He joined the Centre d'Art in 1951.
There is often a touch of humor in his paintings. He leans toward themes
of Voodoo, carnival, holidays and especially paradise scenes. He has
exhibited widely in Europe.

- Obas, Charles. 1927 (Plaisance) – 1968. After beginning his work at the Centre
d'Art, he helped found the Foyer des plastique. A talented musician as
well as painter.

- Obin, Philome. 1892 (Limbe). Obin had been painting while working other jobs.
He considered his first "real" painting the first one he sent to the Centre d'Art when it opened. In 1945 he led the opening of an annex to the
Centre d'Art for unknown artists. He is also one of the muralist of Holy
Trinity Cathedral.

who was guided and influenced by his more famous older brother. He joined the Centre d'Art in 1948 and painted many historical themes.

First a member of the Centre d'Art, he left with Price and others to

- Paul, Damien. 1941. (Drouillard on the Cul-de-Sac plain). He joined the
Centre d'Art in 1969 as a sculptor. He added painting to his work,
and retained Voodoo as his primary theme.

became associated with the Monnin Gallery in 1972. His primary theme
is Voodoo.

- Philippe-Auguste, Salnave. 1908 (St. Marc). A lawyer and magistrate who
has written books on law and poetry, began painting in 1958. He
joined the Centre d'Art in 1960 and became famous with his jungle

- Pierre, Andre. 1916 (Port-au-Prince.) A Voodoo priest and mystic, he met
Maya Deren in 1947. She introduced him to the Centre d'Art. After 1959
he became a full-time painter.

- Pierre, Fernand. 1919 (Carrefour) He came to the Centre d'Art in 1947 to
trade some of his clay dogs for paint and canvas to begin painting.
He has exhibited in the U.S. and Haiti.

- Pierre-Louis, Prosper. 1947. Jacmel. Worked at Saint-Soleil. Has exhibited
in Israel as well as Haiti.

- Pinchinat, Max. 1925 (Port-au-Prince) – 1985 (Paris). He joined the Centre d'Art
in 1947, but in 1949 joined the break away group in the Foyer des plastique. He won a scholarship to study in Paris and after a brief return
to Haiti lived there until his death. He exhibited in the U.S., Europe,
South America and Haiti.

Mainly a graphics artist. He's done album covers for Billie Holiday,
Charlie Parker and other artists. He has exhibited at The Brooklyn
Museum.

- Poisson, Louverture. Born in Les Cayes in 1914, died in 1984. He joined the
Centre d'Art in 1948.

Studied in both France and the U.S., he returned to Haiti and joined

and became treasure of), having received a medal in New York in 1939.

Mexico. Then he moved to New York and began to exhibit in both

- Saint-Brice, Robert. 1893 (Petionville) – 1973 (Port-au-Prince) A Voodoo priest
who was introducted to painting when he was 50. He learned about the
impressionists and began to express his dreams in paint, which he took
to be messages from the loa. He joined the Centre d'Art in 1949.

Feb. 15, 1906 – 1973. After attending St. Louis de Gonzazque, he studied vocational arts at Damien School (1924-1927). He began painting in 1927. Lawyer, novelist and widely exhibited painter. He secured his
fame before the 1944 art revival. He studied under Jean Charlot at the
Art Students' League in New York in 1941.

of the School of Beauty, which honors women. He has exhibited widely
in Haiti, Canada and the U.S.

He has exhibited widely in U.S., Europe and the Caribbean. His
paintings tend toward the dreamy and fantastic and each painting tends
to focus on one or two colors as the focus.

Arts in Port-au-Prince and eventually became a professor. He has
serious interests in music and philosophy as well as painting. He is
a member of the circle of avant-garde artists.

- Stephane, Micius. 1912. (Born in Bainet) In 1946 he joined the Centre d'Art
and began painting. He is known for his scenes of everyday life painted
in the naïve and realist styles. He has exhibited widely in Europe and
the United States.

in New York, then moved to Paris in 1961 where he remained.
He is more of a Haitian who became an international painter than
a Haitian painter. He has exhibited widely in Europe.

Port-au-Prince and in New York. He features rural scenes.

Mexico and was deeply influeced by the painting of Diago Riviera.
He began to paint and associated with some of the avant-garde

Gerard Valcin, he joined the Foyer des plastique in the early 1960s,

Center in 1963 for poets, musicians and artists. He studied in France

- Wiener, Freddy. 1943—1979 (b. Port-au-Prince; d. lost at sea).
Studied in Paris from 1966-69. In 1973 he nearly drowned in a
boating accident. Many of his paintings reflected this expience with
haunting sea scenes. In 1975 he disappeared at sea.
