Spain formally ceded the western portion of Hispaniola (very close t the present borders of Haiti and the Dominican Republic) in the Treaty of Ryswick on September 20, 1697.
However, the French had de facto rule of the area from at least 1659 when they established the first governorship of the region. Below is a list of the early governors of Saint-Domingue.
