Some General Notes on the Haitian Revolution

These notes, unless otherwise specified, are from Waxman

• After Hedouville was sent back to France, the Directorie took his position, though they told Toussaint they supported him. They actually supported Rigaud.

• Civil War followed between Toussaint and Rigaud.

• Nov. 9, 1799 Napoleon took over. He wanted Toussaint out and wanted to reestablish slavery.

• After Vincent (Napoleon's lackey) visited Rigaud, he couldn't get people to fight for him. They saw through Napoleon's strategy. Rigaud left for France.
• Aug. 1, 1800 Toussaint took Aux Cayes, signifying the end of the Civil War.
• (Waxman) p. 175. Moyse, Toussaint's nephew, commander of the North, defied Toussaint and killed 300 whites. Toussaint had him tried and executed.
• Toussaint's constitution was the ostensible reason for sending French troops to take over.
• (Waxman) p. 197. Rigaud, Petion and Boyer were all part of Napoleon's invasion force.
• P. 212-213 (Waxman) May 7, 1802. Toussaint agreed to terms ending the first war with the French.
