• See the book THE VIENEESE: SPLENDOR, TWILIGHT AND EXILE   pages 114-115 for an especially fascinating story of how the city of Vienna commissioned three huge paintings, Philosophy, Jurisprudence and Medicine for the university building, then backed down on mounting them. Klimt purchased them back from the city (by returning his advance). Unfortunately they were last lost in a fire. Herman Bahr, leader of the literary group, Jung Wien, led a protest against the city's decision not to mount the paintings.
