The International Network of Museums for Peace (INMP) is a non-profit organisation that aims to build a global culture of peace by strengthening the work of museums for peace. The foundation was established since 1992 and granted special Consultative Status with the United Nations ECOSOC in 2014.
What are museums for peace about?
When you first hear of a museum for peace you may be slightly mystified or perhaps even a bit sceptical. It is easy to imagine what goes into a war museum, but what can you put in a peace museum? And if the peace movement is to be represented in a museum, does that mean it is being relegated to the past?
Museums for peace are non-profit educational institutions that promote a culture of peace through collecting, displaying and interpreting peace related material. Museums for peace inform the public about peace and nonviolence using illustrations from the lives of individuals, the work of organisations, campaigns, historical events, etc. One of the strengths of museums for peace is that they can reach out to and involve a broad general public, many of whom might not be involved in the peace movement per se. Every museum for peace tells its own story, displays different peace related artefacts and focuses on different periods and places in the history of peace.
The International Network of Museums for Peace is a worldwide network of peace museums that share in the same desire to build a global culture of peace. It also includes peace gardens and other peace related sites, centres and institutions which are involved in public peace education through exhibitions, documentation and similar activities.
