Travelling Exhibition: Erich Maria Remarque – The Militant Pacifist

This bilingual exhibition, in German and English, gives a detailed insight in the life and work of Erich Maria Remarque. The main focus is on his humanistic-political involvement and his transformation into a militant pacifist. The large number of international publiations show the worldwide distribution of Remarque’s writings, and at the same time give insight in over 50 years of bookcover design. Less known aspects of his life included in this exhibition are his work in film, his help with refugees in Swiss and American exile, and his correspondence with people like Marlene Dietrich and Thomas Mann. Overall, the exhibition offers a complex portait of the complex personality Erich Maria Remarque was, and who produced a chronicle of 20th century German history with his work.

The exhibition includes 50 framed photos (49 of 50 x 70 cm; one of 70 x 100 cm) and numerous original documents. It is available as PDF and can also be rented as a English/Russian version. Photos of the exhibition can be seen here.
