Travelling Exhibition: Hans Calmeyer and the Rescue of the Jews in The Netherlands

Designed on the occasion of Calmeyer’s 100th birthday, this exhibition displays the life and work of Osnabrück lawyer Hans Calmeyer (1903-1972), with special focus on his time in The Netherlands. During the German occupation of the Netherlands, he saved thousands of Jews from deportation and thus murder in the Nazi extermination camps. “Service Calmeyer” was involved in the German occupation administration and it is explained how it was possible to create bureaucratic clearances for the rescue of Jews. Sources illustrate Calmeyer’s staff and trustworthy Dutch colleagues, but he himself was the engine and centre of the rescue operation. What is the story and who were involved?

The exhibition does not end with the end of the war in 1945. Calmeyer has worked until his death with the Dutch theme, and his key issues included the classification and justification of his actions, and how to respond to being a savior for the Jews.

In 28 panels (50*70cm) Calmeyer’s work and his service for the general public is explained, using informative documents and easy to understand illustrations.
