Incidents of December 17, 2001: the general coordinator of OPL confirms that
a deal has been reached with the government on compensation

--

Port-au-Prince, December 19, 2002 -(AHP)- Gérard Pierre-Charles, General
coordinator of OPL, confirmed Thursday that his party has reached a
settlement with the government providing for his party to receive 70 million
gourdes for damages suffered at the time of the incidents of December 17,
2001.

"We have held discussions with officials of the Ministry of Justice and we
received a call from President Aristide on the question", Mr. Pierre-Charles
announced. He noted however that he has not yet received any official
notificiation of the terms.

Mr. Pierre-Charles considers that this arrangement constitutes a positive
step toward the resolution of the crisis. He said he hopes that the
government will continue to move forward in this direction.

The OPL leader explained however that despite the agreement reached on
payment of damages, his organization will not join in the process of
formation of the new CEP as long as other demands remain unmet including the
disarmament of all those in possession of illegal weapons and the arrest of
all individuals accused of involvement in the December 17, 2001 incidents
related to an attack against the National Palace.
