14559: Re: 14553: Knowles :travel to Haiti, Visa requirement (fwd)
From: Phil Knowles <Phildk@prodigy.net>
When I landed at PAP Oct 17, we non-nationals were diverted to a new room at
the right off the incomers line, and told we needed a visa to enter Haiti.
The staff was polite, the room was bright and cool, the procedures were
"being developed". I think it was Day 1.
It took 45-60 minutes, we got visas, and learned they would be free 'for
this month'.
During my stay I learned that no one seemed to have had advance word - a
local and well known travel agent was totally surprised; an executive with
Haiti's Travel & Tourism bureau was equally surprised. No one thought it
made sense to charge a heavy fee to enter the country, since most visitors
come to help, not to lie on a beach.
There were rumors that a visa would cost $100 (USD), though no one thought
that would be sensible or could possibly last.
I've been off list for a while - what is the latest - no visas, or visas
at no cost?
