15797: Marassa to Saint Vil's question Re: 15746:Bahamas (fwd)
From: DeSprit Marassa <lwasauvaj@hotmail.com>
Marassa want to answer question Saint Vil ask about Haitian on deathrow in
the United States.
Saint Vil ask "Where is the Haitian Government in the affair?" (our
paraphrase)
Marassa want to point out very important quote from Bahamian Attorney
General Alfred Sears detailing Haitian gov't policy re., Haitian migrants.
This from post 15746 in article written by Kashan Poitier.
quote from article:
"....stated Attorney General Alfred Sears, who was a part of the delegation.
He said: "It's in the interest of Haiti to have a safety valve for its
population, given the state of its economy. Also, these persons, when they
are not in Haiti, they send money back and the remittances that are received
from Haitian immigrants abroad, including The Bahamas, is an important
source of revenue for the country. So, from the government's perspective,
having a population outside that is industrious and that has worked in
another country is a benefit."
Haitian government can't say this publicly but everyone know it is policy.
So Marassa's conclusion is that Haitian on death row is not sending money
back to Haiti so gov't really not so interested in him. Although, one would
think that with all money Ira Kurzban recieve he would offer to do the case
Pro Bono. More importantly, Marasta reads this to mean that ameliorating
the suffering of Haitian population NOT in the financial interest of Haitian
government. If they create jobs, build roads, hospitals, schools and
professionalize the police, people won't leave, which means less money
coming back to Haiti to buy imported goods that the government taxes and
then spends on nice cars, travelling per diems in U.S. dolas, and the nice
girls at the PRESS CLUB on thursday and friday nights.
The Devil in the details...but don't tell Nadal.
Marassa
