Bertha von Suttner, the first woman to receive the Peace Nobel Prize, was the spokeswoman of the international peace movement before the first World War. She participated in the first and the second The Hague Peace Conferences. During the Second conference, in 1907, she held an informal salon at the Kurhaus where she received leaders of the world and convinced them to communicate with each other, with the idea to prevent the First World War.
Take tram 1 until stop World Forum and walk to the left to the park where a nice villa can be seen from the street, only.
Villa Hejmo Nia was owned by a philantropic family that supported women’s rights and peace campaigner Aletta Jacobs. Mien von Wulfften accompanied Aletta in an informal diplomatic mission for mediation in the begining of the First World War. Aletta Jacobs and Bertha von Suttner exchanged ideas about women’s rights and the feminist cause and they respected each other, but never worked close together.
Walk back to World Forum tram station and continue to Churchillplein 1 where you’ll find Yougoslavia tribunal. It was established in 1993 and will be closed in November 2017.
